Jee Grace B. Suyo earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2005 and master’s degree in Marine Affairs in 2012 from the University of the Philippines Visayas, Miagao, Iloilo, Philippines. She is currently completing a postgraduate degree in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines. Her undergraduate and post-graduate researches focused on disaster risk management, adaptation, and coping strategies. She worked as a Research Assistant for various research projects in the University of the Philippines Visayas for five years until she joined the Aquaculture Department, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC/AQD) in 2012 as a Technical Assistant under the Farming Systems and Ecology Section. At SEAFDEC/AQD, she explored the dimensions of gender and community engagement for community-based stock enhancement projects. She is currently an Early Career Researcher (ECR) for the GlobalSeaweedSTAR Project funded by the UK Research and Innovation – Global Challenge Research Fund (UKRI-GCRF) for the Socioeconomic Resilience component. Before embarking on fieldwork activities, she participated in a 6-month Professional and Academic Skills training on seaweeds research at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) in Oban, Scotland and in the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) in London, United Kingdom. Her work focuses on seaweed value chain, with emphasis on governance, social networks, risks and risk management, and gender. She has presented papers in national and international academic conferences and has published manuscripts in international journals. Her most recent publications in the Marine Policy journal focus on power relations and risk and risk management strategies of different stakeholder groups in the Philippine seaweed industry. Both papers underscore the role of gender in shaping people’s perceptions and behavior towards opportunities and challenges in the seaweed carrageenan industry. Apart from her research engagement, she is a faculty at the Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas.
