Thank you Dr Alan for your comments and suggestions
Yes, we are keenly interested in bringing more seaweeds, particularly native flora, in the cultivation domain
However, we are open to the species introduction if they create positive economic impact on the Indian seaweed industry without any environment effect.
As you know, Indian seaweed industry is showing signs of rapid growth opening new opportunities to increase our production capability. We are going to be more innovative in our approach to developing classic processing technologies helping to get the best from the seaweed resources.
Yes, it is very important if the Indian seaweed industry to have sustainable supply through offshore farming. There should be some kind of harmony between community farming and offshore farming so that both coexist. However, the offshore farming may need overseas tie up as we don't have indigenous technologies at present. We are very open to collaborations in this domain.

Thank you for your talk Dr Reddy!

I really hope India can become a major producer of a number of seaweeds and particularly those from the native flora.

Do you think there will be any other introduced species used for cultivation?

Of the biomass cultivated in Indian waters - do you think it will all be consumed in a domestic market, i.e. will biomass be attractive to entrepreneurs to set up local bio refineries (MUZE) and valorise the seaweeds for the local economy?

Do you think seaweed cultivation will be pushed into deeper water due to increasing surface temperatures? If so, how will that affect the people involved in the cultivation areas.

Thank you Dr. Reddy for your nice presentation.

India has a long coastlines but seaweed farming is developed in very small geographical regions. What is the main limiting factor in the expansion of seaweed farming?

Thank you Dr Imchen for a very interesting and very pertinent comment. As you rightly pointed out, seaweed farming in India is largely confined to a Tamil Nadu state only despite having a large coastline more than 7500 km. Incidentally, this coast is easily accessible for community and conducive for seaweed farming when compared with other coastal states. Also the coastal people living in this state have long been associated with seaweed collection from wild beds and supply to local industry as means of livelihood. This could be one of the reasons why seaweed farming was quickly adopted by these folks as the natural resources in nature on decline year on year.

Thank you very much for your great presentation.

The problems found in your country are similarly found also in our country, Indonesia. I just want to get information about the tissue-cultured seedlings developed significantly in India. How many percent the Indian farmers use the seedlings? do the seedlings have some better resistance than those of local seedling or non tissue-cultured seedling?

From your presentation you mentioned also the impact of climate change to the seaweed farming. I suggest you to try to plant the seeding to more deeper in water column > 50 cm to make more better resistance to hot seawater temperature.

thanks

Dear Dr. Reddy,

For getting better seedling and can be useful for getting high production I suggest you to try to use seedling produce from grafting method. For your reference please find our paper attached.

Thanks

Thank you Asian for sharing your article describing grafting of seaweeds. I will go through it and try to benefit from your research work.

Thanks for your nice presentation. I am just wondering, what is the current status of the production in Indian coasts? Is it increasing or decreasing? Considering the climatic condition of Indian coasts/seas, what is the future of seaweed culture in India? Thank you.

The production in recent times is increasing but is less than 2014 level. The current production of Kappaphycus is approx 3000 tons fresh weight. Nevertheless, there is a lot of impetus given to promote seaweeds production in the country. Many private companies also venturing in this sector. I hope the production in the near future will be far more than current level of production.

Thank you Dr. Reddy Sir for the nice presentation. It was just a refreshing snapshot of seaweed cultivation scenario in India. For me the most surprising was that Kappaphycus farming has not yet overcome in terms of yields even after 7 years of set-back. I hope the things will improve soon with private -public ventures. Seaweed cultivation will be successful in other coastal states as well. Thank you.

Hi Puja,
I am glad that you liked the presentation. Thank you for the appreciation and for very pertinent observation. It is sheer lack of commitment to find a solution and put the cultivation on fast track. I hope the great interest shown by different agencies now help to transform the Indian seaweed sector and guide to new path so far not been tread by others
